GM foods offer huge potential to improve health

The use of genetically modified (GM) food has the potential to significantly improve Britons' health.

Such is the assertion of Barbara Gallani, director of food safety and science for the Food and Drink Federation, who states that GM produce - as well as other forms of biotechnology - can create better quality food.

And while it can also increase the quantity of food available for inspirational recipes, Ms Gallani points out the impact of GM food and biotechnology needs to be assessed thoroughly.

"Robust controls are necessary to protect the consumer and the environment; and consumer education and information on both potential risks and benefits are fundamental to public acceptance," she states.

Her comments come after Sir John Beddington, the government's chief scientific advisor, told the BBC that as global demand for food is set to rise, GM organisms could help address a number of potential health problems.
